In this kitchen, the lighting was dim andit was hard to see even in daylight. The cabinets were placed under a soffit and made the 9' ceilings look short. I chose to tear out the soffit and build shelves to the ceiling.I tore out the florescent lighting over the island and install stained wood with a custom light fixture I designed, built, and installed. I hired an electrician to install cabinet and recessed lighting to make this a bright space to enjoy.
